Shykh Seraj is the proponent of the concept of roof gardening back in the 80s on the television media. It has now become so popular that urban and semi-urban citizens of the country are now striving to make the best out of it. By turning a rooftop into productive growing space we combat the issues of climate change while providing fresh food. Rooftop farms come in two main forms: open-air and greenhouse - each with its own unique advantages. Roof farms benefit the community in many ways. A roof farm can lower the temperature of roofs and the surrounding air... CO2 & Air Quality... By reducing a building’s energy usage roof farms can reduce carbon emissions. • Bandarban Jhum Cultivation. (জুম চাষ)

Jhum cultivation is an age-old, rain-fed cultivation method, practiced by the Indigenous people on the hills and slopes of the Chittagong Hill Tracts, because of the lack of flat land suitable for farming. This system involves cutting back and clearing large areas of the hillside through fire, which also acts as a fertiliser, to obtain clean, fresh soil to farm, and why it is sometimes referred to as a ‘slash-and-burn’ method. This agricultural system is practised by the individual or family, however on occasion may involve an entire village. Seeds of different crops are mixed together and sewn in this ‘field’ after the first rain shower has fallen, usually during the months of April to May. Plants on the slopes survive the rainy season floods. Typically, upland rice and vegetables are ha...

Roof farming increases urban density by making use of a previously unused space. By adding green space in an urban area, we can increase biodiversity and provide habitat for a diversity of insects and birds.

So they decide to search primary communication system amongthe people, who are away from city or away from the centre of power and make it able to get it and its power. With that aim this team formed Subaltern Communication Research Center (SCRC) in 2012. When they started work, they observed that working within the capital Subaltern Communication Research would become conventional NGO research which could not fulfill required expectation. So they decided to become familiar with the people away from city or power. To become more familiar with them they decided to select an occupation. Though in Bangladesh agriculture based country and maximum member of the team has come from agricultural family, so they decided to work with agricultural society. Then they have come to a point by discussion and set procedure and strategy. They decided to reduce the loss of life and nature by farming. They understood chemical fertilizer use practice, pesticide use and anthropogenic culture causes toxicity in life, nature and food within those days. As consequence they decided to do life, nature and environment friendly agriculture and named it “Natural Farming”. Back to village In 2012 they were starting to search for land to culture. In March, 2013 adjacent to Dhaka district’ Amtali village, Doulatpur Upozilla of Manikganj district beside a small river by lease land they were farming chemical and toxin free natural crop. In every holyday of the week, they have been working in the crop field of Manikganj. At August when crop production started, the farm was lost by river bank erosion. Actually, expenditure of the farm has been continuing by the job salary of members or other expense. Then, 15 September 2014, at Kaliganj, Jhinaidah the farm reformed in the crop land of a voluntary organization. Natural Farming, Kaliganj, Jhinaidah discussed with the village farmers, the organization and decided to start natural farming in Kaliganj. One of an organizer of the team left his occupation, journalism in Dhaka and went to Kaliganj. He started to culture cropland in natural way and communicates with the village farmers. April, 2015 in Pachgaw, Araihajar, Narayanganj another farm is establishing. Typically, upland rice and vegetables are harvested within a few months after sowing, whereas cotton, turmeric and arum are harvested after 8 or 9 months, during December. This is followed by several years of wood harvesting or crop growing until the soil loses its fertility. Once the land becomes inadequate for crop production it is then left to be reclaimed by natural jungle vegetation once again, while the same activity continues elsewhere, with this cycle continually repeating itself. In the past, land was left fallow for between 15 to 20 years, which allowed the soil time to regenerate its fertility. These days however population pressure, coupled with acute land scarcity has forced that time frame to be reduced to a rotation cycle of between 3 to 5 years. This is widely recognised as not being sufficient for soil to regain its productivity. Historically Jhum farming represented a subsistence shifting cultivation. These days it is gradually evolving and becoming more market oriented, which is also adding pressure for shorter land rotation. Ironically it seems possible fertilizer will become more and more necessary, and come to play an important role in this process, in stark contrast to the purely organic practice of the past. I met this woman while out walking in the jungle. She was on her way back to her village home, carrying some of her harvest in a traditional head basket, which are used extensively here.
